The “Suspects” are a loose collective of musicians. This multi-generational band has a wealth of experience, an extensive repertoire of jazz, soul, gospel, country, Americana, R&B – whatever feels good.
The heritage of this band is vast. Obviously there is a family connection but the musical heritage is epic. The oldest member of the band, the beautiful Bruce McGill, began playing in jazz bands in the early 60s around Melbourne and along the coast (including the famous Arab in Lorne) while a very young art student. The youngest member, Daniel, recently released his debut with a ‘Brit Pop’ style band known as the “Lip Sync Chicks”. The experience of these guys runs from some great Melbourne R&B/Swing/Soul bands of the 70s/80s, The Honeydrippers”, “The Flying Duck Brothers”, “Jump and Jive” and “The Swingin’ Sidewalks”, to the 80s synth-dub sounds of “Love Dub”, the psychedelic, reggae groove of “The Beachniks” & “The Feelin’ Groovies” and the big band swing of “The Pearly Shells”.
The members include David Jones, Dai Jones, Hugh Jones, Murray Jones, Daniel Parsons-Jones, Evan Jones, Rob “Snake” Nicholson, Bruce McGill and Jeremy Du Ve with regular special guests.
The vocals are a real strength. Rich harmonies and a variety of singers. Rarely does anyone sing two songs in a row. When you watch these guys, apart from their musical skills, it is the joy they have playing music together that is striking.
The Suspects perform at Geelong Jazz Soirees Summer Series 2:30pm February 17th.
